Rainwater Harvesting System Components: From Roof to Reuse
A rainwater harvesting system is more than a tank. Reliable systems include collection, pretreatment, storage, pumps, controls, treatment, safe overflow routing, and maintenance access.
Core components
- Collection surface and gutters.
- Leaf screens, first-flush diversion, or sediment pretreatment.
- Tank or cistern with access, venting, and overflow.
- Pump and pressure controls.
- Filtration and disinfection if required.
- Makeup water or bypass controls where needed.
Storage sizing
Tank size depends on roof area, rainfall depth, runoff coefficient, reuse demand, dry periods, overflow routing, and available space. A larger tank is not always better if water sits too long or demand is low.
